1st Samuel 7

1 st Samuel 7 - 8

And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord. And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.

7 And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord.
2 And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.
3 And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
4 Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the Lord only.
5 And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the Lord.
6 And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the Lord. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.
7 And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
8 And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the Lord our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
9 And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the Lord: and Samuel cried unto the Lord for Israel; and the Lord heard him.
10 And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.
11 And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar.
12 Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.
13 So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
14 And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
15 And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
16 And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.
17 And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the Lord.

8 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.
3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.
7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
10 And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.
11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.
12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.
19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;
20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.
22 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

7 तब किर्यत्यारीम के लोग आए, और यहोवा के सन्दूक को उठा कर पहाड़ी पर अबीनादाब के घर में ले गए, और यहोवा के सन्दूक की रखवाली करने के लिये उसके पुत्र एलीआजर को पवित्र किया।

2 और जब सन्दूक किर्यत्यारीम में रहा, तब बहुत समय बीत गया; अर्थात् बीस वर्ष बीत गए: और इस्राएल का सारा घराना यहोवा के पीछे विलाप करने लगा।

3 और शमूएल ने इस्राएल के सारे घराने से कहा, यदि तुम अपने सारे मन से यहोवा की ओर फिरो, तो अपने बीच से पराए देवताओं और अश्तारोत को दूर करो, और अपने मन को यहोवा की ओर लगाओ, और केवल उसकी उपासना करो: तब वह तुम्हें पलिश्तियों के हाथ से छुड़ाएगा।

4 तब इस्राएलियों ने बाल देवताओं और अश्तारोत को दूर किया, और केवल यहोवा की उपासना की।

5 और शमूएल ने कहा, सारे इस्राएलियों को मिस्पे में इकट्ठा करो, और मैं तुम्हारे लिये यहोवा से प्रार्थना करूंगा।

6 और वे मिस्पे में इकट्ठे हुए, और जल भरकर यहोवा के साम्हने उंडेला, और उस दिन उपवास किया, और वहां कहा, हम ने यहोवा के विरुद्ध पाप किया है। और शमूएल ने मिस्पे में इस्राएलियों का न्याय किया।

7 और जब पलिश्तियों ने सुना कि इस्राएली मिस्पे में इकट्ठे हुए हैं, तब पलिश्तियों के सरदार इस्राएलियों के विरुद्ध चढ़ आए। और जब इस्राएलियों ने यह सुना, तो वे पलिश्तियों से डर गए।

8 और इस्राएलियों ने शमूएल से कहा, हमारे लिये यहोवा परमेश्वर से प्रार्थना करना न छोड़, कि वह हमें पलिश्तियों के हाथ से बचाए।

9 और शमूएल ने एक दूध पीते मेमने को लेकर यहोवा को होमबलि करके चढ़ाया; और शमूएल ने इस्राएलियों के लिये यहोवा से प्रार्थना की; और यहोवा ने उसकी सुन ली।

10 और जब शमूएल होमबलि चढ़ा रहा था, तब पलिश्ती इस्राएलियों से युद्ध करने के लिये निकट आए; परन्तु उस दिन यहोवा ने पलिश्तियों पर बड़ा गरजना करके उन्हें घबरा दिया; और वे इस्राएलियों से हार गए।

11 और इस्राएल के लोग मिस्पे से निकलकर पलिश्तियों का पीछा करते हुए उन्हें तब तक मारते रहे, जब तक वे बेतकार के पास नहीं पहुँच गए।

12 तब शमूएल ने एक पत्थर लेकर मिस्पे और शेन के बीच में खड़ा किया, और उसका नाम एबेनेज़र रखा, और कहा, अब तक यहोवा ने हमारी सहायता की है।

13 इस प्रकार पलिश्तियों को दबा दिया गया, और वे फिर इस्राएल के सिवाने में नहीं आए: और शमूएल के जीवन भर यहोवा का हाथ पलिश्तियों के विरुद्ध रहा।

14 और जो नगर पलिश्तियों ने इस्राएल से छीन लिए थे, वे इस्राएल को लौटा दिए गए, अर्थात् एक्रोन से लेकर गत तक के सिवाने, और उसके सिवाने इस्राएल ने पलिश्तियों के हाथ से छुड़ा लिए। और इस्राएल और एमोरियों के बीच शांति रही।

15 और शमूएल जीवन भर इस्राएल का न्याय करता रहा।

16 और वह प्रति वर्ष बेतेल, गिलगाल और मिस्पे का चक्कर लगाता हुआ उन सब स्थानों में इस्राएल का न्याय करता था।

17 और वह रामा को लौट आया; क्योंकि उसका घर वहीं था, और वह वहीं इस्राएल का न्याय करता था, और वहीं उसने यहोवा के लिये एक वेदी बनाई थी।

8 और ऐसा हुआ कि जब शमूएल बूढ़ा हो गया, तो उसने अपने बेटों को इस्राएल पर न्याय करने के लिए नियुक्त किया।

2 उसके जेठे का नाम योएल था, और दूसरे का नाम अबियाह था; वे बेर्शेबा में न्याय करने के लिए नियुक्त थे।

3 और उसके बेटे उसके बताए रास्ते पर नहीं चले, बल्कि वे पैसे के पीछे भागे, और घूस लेकर न्याय को बिगाड़ दिया।

4 तब इस्राएल के सब पुरनिये इकट्ठे हुए और शमूएल के पास रामा में आए,

5 और उससे कहा, देख, तू बूढ़ा हो गया है, और तेरे बेटे तेरे बताए रास्ते पर नहीं चलते; अब हमारे लिए एक राजा बना जो सब जातियों की नाईं हमारा न्याय करे।

6 लेकिन जब उन्होंने कहा, 'हमारा न्याय करने के लिए हमें एक राजा दे।' तब शमूएल को यह बात बुरी लगी। और शमूएल ने यहोवा से प्रार्थना की।

7 और यहोवा ने शमूएल से कहा, 'लोग जो कुछ तुझ से कहें, उसे सुन; क्योंकि उन्होंने तुझे नहीं, बल्कि मुझे ही अस्वीकार किया है, कि मैं उन पर राज्य न करूँ।

8 जिस दिन से मैं उन्हें मिस्र से निकाल लाया, उस दिन से लेकर आज तक वे जो कुछ करते आए हैं, कि वे मुझे त्यागकर दूसरे देवताओं की सेवा करते आए हैं, उसी प्रकार वे तेरे साथ भी करते हैं।
9 इसलिये अब तू उनकी बात मान, परन्तु उनके सम्मुख गम्भीरता से बोल, और उन्हें बता कि उन पर राज्य करनेवाला राजा कैसा होगा।
10 और शमूएल ने यहोवा के सब वचन उन लोगों को कह सुनाए, जिन्होंने उस से राजा मांगा था।
11 और उसने कहा, जो राजा तुम पर राज्य करेगा, उसका यह ढंग होगा: वह तुम्हारे पुत्रों को लेकर अपने रथों और सवारों के लिये नियुक्त करेगा; और कुछ उसके रथों के आगे दौड़ेंगे।
12 और वह अपने लिये हजार और पचास पर प्रधान नियुक्त करेगा; और उन्हें अपनी भूमि जोतने, अपनी फसल काटने, अपने युद्ध के हथियार और रथों के हथियार बनाने के लिये नियुक्त करेगा।
13 और वह तुम्हारी बेटियों को मिष्ठान बनाने, रसोइया और बेकरी का काम करने के लिये नियुक्त करेगा।
14 और वह तुम्हारे खेत, और तुम्हारी दाख की बारियाँ, और तुम्हारे जैतून के बाग, यहाँ तक कि उनमें से सबसे अच्छे-अच्छे को लेकर अपने सेवकों को देगा।

15 और वह तुम्हारे बीज और दाख की बारियों का दसवाँ हिस्सा लेकर अपने हाकिमों और अपने सेवकों को देगा।

16 और वह तुम्हारे दास-दासियों और तुम्हारे अच्छे-अच्छे जवानों और गधों को लेकर अपने काम पर लगाएगा।

17 और वह तुम्हारी भेड़-बकरियों का दसवाँ हिस्सा लेगा, और तुम उसके सेवक होगे।

18 और उस दिन तुम अपने चुने हुए राजा के कारण चिल्लाओगे; और उस दिन यहोवा तुम्हारी न सुनेगा।

19 फिर भी लोगों ने शमूएल की बात मानने से इनकार कर दिया; और उन्होंने कहा, नहीं; लेकिन हम पर एक राजा होगा;

20 ताकि हम भी सब जातियों के समान हो जाएँ; और हमारा राजा हमारा न्याय करे, और हमारे आगे-आगे चले, और हमारी लड़ाई लड़े।

21 और शमूएल ने लोगों की सारी बातें सुनीं, और यहोवा के कानों में सुनाईं। 22 और यहोवा ने शमूएल से कहा, उनकी बात मान, और उनके लिए एक राजा बना। तब शमूएल ने इस्राएलियों से कहा, तुम सब अपने अपने नगर को जाओ।
