1 Chronicles 19 - 20

Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead. And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

19 Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.
2 And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
3 But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?
4 Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.
5 Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.
7 So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
8 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
9 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.
10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.
11 And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.
12 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.
13 Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight.
14 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.
15 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
16 And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.
18 But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.
19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

20 And it came to pass, that after the year was expired, at the time that kings go out to battle, Joab led forth the power of the army, and wasted the country of the children of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem. And Joab smote Rabbah, and destroyed it.
2 And David took the crown of their king from off his head, and found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it; and it was set upon David's head: and he brought also exceeding much spoil out of the city.
3 And he brought out the people that were in it, and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes. Even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
4 And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Sippai, that was of the children of the giant: and they were subdued.
5 And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver's beam.
6 And yet again there was war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot and he also was the son of the giant.
7 But when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David's brother slew him.
8 These were born unto the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

2 तब दाऊद ने कहा, मैं नाहाश के पुत्र हानून पर कृपा करूंगा, क्योंकि उसके पिता ने मुझ पर कृपा की थी। और दाऊद ने उसके पिता के विषय में उसे शान्ति देने के लिये दूत भेजे। तब दाऊद के सेवक हानून के पास उसे शान्ति देने के लिये अम्मोनियों के देश में आए।
3 परन्तु अम्मोनियों के हाकिमों ने हानून से कहा, क्या तू समझता है कि दाऊद तेरे पिता का आदर करता है, कि उसने तेरे पास शान्ति देनेवाले भेजे हैं? क्या उसके सेवक तेरे पास खोज करने, और देश का भेद लेने, और उसका नाश करने के लिये नहीं आए हैं?
4 तब हानून ने दाऊद के सेवकों को पकड़कर उनके बाल मुड़वाए, और उनके वस्त्र नितम्बों के पास से काट डाले, और उन्हें भेज दिया।
5 तब कुछ लोगों ने जाकर दाऊद को बताया कि उन लोगों की कैसी सेवा की गई। और उसने उनसे मिलने के लिए भेजा: क्योंकि वे लोग बहुत लज्जित थे। और राजा ने कहा, जब तक तुम्हारी दाढ़ी बड़ी न हो जाए, तब तक यरीहो में ठहरो, और फिर लौट आओ।

8 और जब दाऊद को यह पता चला, तो उसने योआब और शूरवीरों की पूरी सेना को भेजा।
9 और अम्मोनियों ने निकलकर नगर के फाटक के सामने युद्ध के लिए पाँति बाँधी: और जो राजा आए थे वे अकेले मैदान में थे।
10 जब योआब ने देखा कि आगे और पीछे दोनों ओर से उसके विरुद्ध युद्ध हो रहा है, तब उसने इस्राएल के सब चुने हुए लोगों में से चुनकर अरामियों के विरुद्ध पाँति बाँधी।

11 और बाकी लोगों को उसने अपने भाई अबीशै के हाथ में सौंप दिया, और उन्होंने अम्मोनियों के विरुद्ध पाँति बाँधी।

12 और उसने कहा, यदि अरामी मुझ पर प्रबल हों, तो तू मेरी सहायता करना; और यदि अम्मोनी तुझ पर प्रबल हों, तो मैं तेरी सहायता करूँगा।

13 तू हियाव बान्ध, और हम अपने लोगों और अपने परमेश्वर के नगरों के लिये वीरता से काम करें; और यहोवा वही करे जो उसकी दृष्टि में अच्छा है।

14 तब योआब और उसके साथ के लोग अरामियों के सामने युद्ध करने के लिये पहुँचे; और वे उसके सामने से भाग गए।

15 और जब अम्मोनियों ने देखा कि अरामी भाग गए हैं, तो वे भी उसके भाई अबीशै के सामने से भाग गए, और नगर में घुस गए। तब योआब यरूशलेम को आया।

16 और जब अरामियों ने देखा कि वे इस्राएल से हार गए हैं, तब उन्होंने दूत भेजकर नदी के पार के अरामियों को बुलवाया, और हदरेजेर की सेना का सेनापति शोपक उनके आगे-आगे चला।
17 और जब दाऊद को यह समाचार मिला, तब उसने सारे इस्राएलियों को इकट्ठा किया, और यरदन नदी पार करके उन पर चढ़ाई की, और उनके विरुद्ध युद्ध की व्यूह रचना की। जब दाऊद ने अरामियों के विरुद्ध युद्ध की व्यूह रचना की, तब वे उसके साथ लड़ने लगे।
18 परन्तु अरामी इस्राएल से भाग गए, और दाऊद ने अरामियों के सात हजार रथी और चालीस हजार पैदल सैनिकों को मार डाला, और सेनापति शोपक को भी मार डाला।
19 और जब हदरेजेर के सेवकों ने देखा कि वे इस्राएल से हार गए हैं, तब उन्होंने दाऊद से संधि कर ली, और उसके अधीन हो गए; और अरामियों ने फिर अम्मोनियों की सहायता न की।

20 और ऐसा हुआ कि जब वर्ष पूरा हुआ, उस समय जब राजा युद्ध करने निकलते हैं, योआब ने सेना की शक्ति का नेतृत्व किया, और अम्मोनियों के देश को उजाड़ दिया, और आकर रब्बा को घेर लिया। परन्तु दाऊद यरूशलेम में ही रहा। और योआब ने रब्बा को जीतकर उसे नाश कर दिया।
2 और दाऊद ने उनके राजा का मुकुट उसके सिर से उतारा, और उसका वजन एक किक्कार सोने का पाया, और उसमें बहुमूल्य रत्न जड़े थे; और उसे दाऊद के सिर पर रखा गया: और वह नगर से बहुत अधिक लूट भी ले आया।
3 और उसने उसमें रहनेवाले लोगों को बाहर निकाला, और उन्हें आरों, लोहे के हैरो, और कुल्हाड़ियों से काटा। दाऊद ने अम्मोनियों के सब नगरों के साथ भी ऐसा ही किया। और दाऊद और सब लोग यरूशलेम को लौट आए।
4 और इसके बाद ऐसा हुआ कि गेजेर में पलिश्तियों के साथ युद्ध हुआ; उस समय हूशाई सिब्बकै ने सिप्पै को, जो रपाई के वंश का था, मार डाला, और वे दब गए।
5 और पलिश्तियों के साथ फिर युद्ध हुआ; और याईर के पुत्र एल्हानान ने गती गोलियत के भाई लहमी को मार डाला, जिसके भाले की छड़ जुलाहे की छड़ के समान थी।
6 और गत में फिर युद्ध हुआ, जहाँ बड़े डील-डौल का एक आदमी था, जिसके हाथ और पाँव में छः-छः अर्थात् चौबीस उंगलियाँ थीं, और वह भी रपाई का बेटा था।
7 परन्तु जब उसने इस्राएल को ललकारा, तब दाऊद के भाई शिमा के पुत्र योनातान ने उसे मार डाला।
8 ये गत में रपाई से उत्पन्न हुए थे; और वे दाऊद और उसके सेवकों के हाथों मारे गए।
