Proverbs 17 - 18

Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife. A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren. The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts.

4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
6 Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
7 Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
11 An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord.
16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
23 A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
24 Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
26 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

18 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.
2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.
3 When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.
4 The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.
5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.
6 A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.
7 A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.
10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
11 The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.
12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.
13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.
14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?
15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
16 A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.
17 He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.
18 The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.
19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
20 A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
22 Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord.
23 The poor useth intreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.
24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

9 जो अपराध को छिपाता है, वह प्रेम का खोजी है; परन्तु जो बात को बार बार दुहराता है, वह परम मित्रों में फूट करा देता है।

10 एक डांट बुद्धिमान के मन में सौ कोड़ों से भी अधिक घुस जाती है।

11 दुष्ट मनुष्य केवल विद्रोह का ही खोजी होता है, इसलिए उसके विरुद्ध एक क्रूर दूत भेजा जाएगा।

12 शावकों से छीनी हुई रीछनी को भी मनुष्य से मिलना चाहिए, न कि मूर्ख को जो मूर्खता में है।

13 जो भलाई के बदले बुराई करता है, उसके घर से बुराई कभी नहीं जाती।

14 झगड़े की शुरूआत पानी के छींटे के समान होती है, इसलिए झगड़े को बीच में ही छोड़ दो।

15 जो दुष्टों को निर्दोष ठहराता है और जो धर्मी को दोषी ठहराता है, वे दोनों यहोवा के सम्मुख घृणित हैं।

16 मूर्ख के हाथ में बुद्धि पाने के लिए मूल्य क्यों है, जबकि वह बुद्धि के लिए मन नहीं लगाता?

17 मित्र सब समयों में प्रेम रखता है, और विपत्ति के समय भाई बन जाता है।

18 जो मनुष्य बुद्धिहीन है, वह हाथ-पैर मारता है, और अपने मित्र के सामने ज़मानत बन जाता है।

19 जो झगड़े से प्रीति रखता है, वह अपराध से प्रीति रखता है; और जो अपने फाटक को ऊंचा करता है, वह विनाश का यत्न करता है।

20 जिसका मन टेढ़ा है, वह भलाई नहीं पाता; और जिसकी जीभ टेढ़ी है, वह विपत्ति में पड़ता है।

22 प्रसन्न मन औषधि के समान भलाई करता है, परन्तु टूटा मन हड्डियों को सुखा देता है।

23 दुष्ट मनुष्य न्याय के मार्गों को बिगाड़ने के लिए अपने सीने से घूस निकालता है।

24 बुद्धि उसके सामने रहती है, परन्तु मूर्ख की आंखें पृथ्वी के छोर तक लगी रहती हैं।

25 मूर्ख पुत्र अपने पिता को दुःखी करता है, और अपनी जननी को दु:ख देता है। 26 धर्मी को दण्ड देना अच्छा नहीं है, और न्याय के कारण हाकिमों को मारना भी अच्छा नहीं है। 27 ज्ञानी अपने वचनों को संयम से बोलता है, और समझदार मनुष्य उत्तम आत्मा वाला होता है। 28 मूर्ख भी जब चुप रहता है, तो बुद्धिमान गिना जाता है, और जो अपना मुंह बन्द रखता है, वह समझदार गिना जाता है।

18 मनुष्य अपनी इच्छा से अलग होकर सब प्रकार की बुद्धि की खोज करता है।

2 मूर्ख को समझ से कोई प्रसन्नता नहीं होती, परन्तु वह अपने मन की खोज करना चाहता है।

3 जब दुष्ट आता है, तब अपमान भी आता है, और अपमान के साथ निन्दा भी आती है।

4 मनुष्य के मुँह के वचन गहरे जल के समान हैं, और बुद्धि का सोता बहते हुए नाले के समान है।

5 दुष्टों का साथ देना अच्छा नहीं है, और न्याय में धर्मी को उलट देना अच्छा नहीं है।

6 मूर्ख के होंठ झगड़े में पड़ जाते हैं, और उसका मुँह मार खाने के लिए पुकारता है।

7 मूर्ख का मुँह उसका नाश है, और उसके होंठ उसकी आत्मा का फंदा हैं।

8 कानाफूसी करनेवाले के वचन घाव के समान हैं, और वे पेट के भीतर तक पहुँच जाते हैं।

9 जो अपने काम में आलसी है, वह बड़े बरबाद करनेवाले का भाई है।

10 यहोवा का नाम दृढ़ गढ़ है, धर्मी उसमें भागकर सुरक्षित रहता है।

11 धनी का धन उसका दृढ़ नगर है, और उसके अपने दंभ में ऊंची दीवार है।

12 विनाश से पहले मनुष्य का मन घमण्डी होता है, और महिमा से पहले नम्रता होती है।

13 जो बात सुनने से पहले उत्तर देता है, वह उसके लिए मूर्खता और लज्जा की बात है।

14 मनुष्य की आत्मा उसकी दुर्बलता को संभालती है; परन्तु घायल आत्मा को कौन सह सकता है?

15 समझदार का मन ज्ञान प्राप्त करता है, और बुद्धिमान के कान ज्ञान की खोज में रहते हैं।

16 मनुष्य का दान उसके लिए मार्ग बनाता है, और उसे महान लोगों के सामने लाता है।

17 जो अपने मामले में पहले आता है, वह धर्मी दिखता है; परन्तु उसका पड़ोसी आकर उसकी खोज करता है।

18 चिट्ठी विवादों को समाप्त करती है, और बलवानों के बीच फूट डालती है।

19 क्रोधित भाई को जीतना दृढ़ नगर से भी कठिन है, और उनके झगड़े किले की सलाखों के समान हैं।

20 मनुष्य का पेट उसके मुँह के फल से तृप्त होगा, और उसके होठों की बढ़ती हुई बातों से वह तृप्त होगा।

21 जीभ के वश में मृत्यु और जीवन दोनों हैं, और जो उससे प्रेम करते हैं, वे उसका फल भोगेंगे।

22 जो स्त्री पाता है, वह उत्तम वस्तु पाता है, और प्रभु का अनुग्रह पाता है।

23 निर्धन लोग बिनती करते हैं, परन्तु धनी लोग कठोरता से उत्तर देते हैं।

24 जिसके मित्र हों, उसे मित्रतापूर्ण व्यवहार करना चाहिए, और ऐसा मित्र होता है, जो भाई से भी अधिक निकट रहता है।
